The General's Age!
The face-off between the Government and General V.K. Singh ended on a peaceful note today. The Army Chief termed it a graceful end to the dispute. The issue was whether the General’s date of birth is May 30, 1950 as per the Government’s stand or May 30, 1951 as maintained by the General. The matriculation record of the General shows 1951 as his year of birth, but his application to the NDA erroneously shows 1950.
The Supreme Court ducked this bouncer by playing mediator. It gently arm twisted the General in to withdrawing his petition while adopting a pacifying attitude. The court observed that the UPSC record, showing 1950 as the General’s date of birth serves as the primary document for determining his tenure of service. The court also referred to the two commitments, provided by the General when he was being promoted to Major General and Lt. General in 2008 and 2009 respectively, wherein he accepted 1950 as his year of birth. This forced the General to withdraw his petition before the court could pass an order but not before he got some assurances from the Attorney General that the government never doubted his integrity. The court also maintained that they had full faith in the General but stated that the Government was not grossly erroneous in considering 1950 as his year of birth. The learned justices of the court questioned the General’s lapses in never correcting the date of birth in his UPSC records and NDA application.
It is difficult to believe that the Government was unaware of the General’s intentions to file a petition in the Supreme Court. It appears to be a case of the two mutually agreeing to sort it out with the help of the highest court, which was tactful in its approach. The Supreme Court went purely by the UPSC records, allowed the Government to take a final call, and did not recognize a true date of birth for the General. The decision does not come across as surprising since the Supreme Court, is in itself an institution that depends on the date of births of individual judges to determine its occupancy and, would have been mindful of the precedent its judgment could have set in resolving any such conflicts that could arise within its own walls.

Q- What do you get when you combine sun, sand and beaches with 4 absolutely excited and peppy 24 something girls?
Ans- A more than awesome time!
It all began on the night of Jan 25th, 2012. 4 girls rushed to the bus stand, panicky and almost sure that this was too good a dream to be true. But destiny had other plans and hence even after being 15 mins late of the scheduled departure time, they had convinced the bus driver (on phone) not to take off without them. The night passed talking and taking short naps in between and before they could even know, it was morning in Goa!
Their first encounters with the taxi drivers had assured them that it was going to be an unfair treatment to their wallets, but who the hell even cared? They reached their hotel near Calangute Beach, which btw was one of the hotspots here (information courtesy, one of the 4 girls who was visiting the place for the 3rd time now)! It was time to unpack and put on the fashionable attire they had carried with them (some shopped, some borrowed). Pink, blue, green, black and white and wow, they looked like blossoms! The girls were ready to take on the territory.
They reached Baga beach and their faces shone, they strolled, ran, played, laughed (more than usual), sun-bathed, had bhel-poori, got themselves tattooed and finally convinced a restaurant owner to put a special table for them near the sea, although it meant blocking the view for some guests and driving them away, but again who even cared? They were here to unwind, they were uninhibited, they were loud, they cracked nasty jokes and they forgot the rest of the world!
The rest of the days, they did some planned sight seeing. One day was spent going to places in North Goa. It started on Coco beach (the name was appealing too!) with the boat ride to a place where they did manage to see 4 dolphins swimming their way to glory; then moving to the Bagator Beach, where they let themselves loose in the waves and also conquered the Chapora Fort (of the Dil Chahta Hai fame) and needless to say they clicked some really cool pictures. The night was action packed at Titos and Mambo, the 2 best discs around and to flatter the lovely ladies, there were guys desperately wanting to accompany them (no-stag-entry-for-boys victims).
Since 4 days were more than enough, the girls did take a tour of South Goa (known for churches), and went to a suicide point (doesn’t every tourist place essentially have ONE such point?). What surprised them was a River Cruise in Panaji – simple but very very pleasant. They also had their share of adventure with water sports at the beach. Although, each sport lasted for 2 minutes or so, they were happy and screamed their hearts out! After all, girls will be girls!
The last supper, as decided long back, was at Brittos and was totally worth all the time and money spent. And it was Sunday evening already. The girls packed and made their way to the airport where they waited till next morning to fly back to Bangalore (another lovely place).
The Goa times were over, the girls only wondered where the 4 days had gone!?! Even today, two weeks after their holiday, they smile fondly at the mere mention of the place! Such, is the beauty and the magic of Goa!
For now, the girls are Goa-smitten and plan to stay so for a long time!

ISB Road Trip to Bharatpur - Part 2
Pratyush called me to mention
That he was waiting for me at the train station
It was 6:45 on a Saturday morning
Late by 45 minutes, I was running
I apologized for the delay since I had just no explanation
Ashish, Pratyush and I got together
Reached the place of Harsh Kataruka with no further bother
After meeting Harsh’s friendly parents
and having some refreshments
and having some refreshments
We were on our way further
We then picked up Abhishek Yadav near Apollo Hospital
And caught up with the other car, driven by Piyush Goyal
With Piyush, were Ashiwinideep Godhara and Varun Jain
The two cars were soon rolling on a highway lane
Towards our hotel that turned out to be royal
The evening was spent at Fatehpur-Sikri
We hired a guide to explain the history
But soon sacked him, since he was not authorized by the ASI
And was unwilling to show us around the palaces of Mariam, Turkey Sultana, and Jodhabai
Since his access to those monuments was not ticket free
The late evening was spent chatting
A game of cards made it all the more entertaining
Starters consisted of peanuts, egg bhurji and paneer–capsicum masala
Served with Whiskey, Water and Soda
Followed by dinner at a nearby Dhaba at 12AM in the morning
The next day, we went in to the Keoladeo National Park on rickshaw and cycle
Along with a master photographer and his disciple
We saw the Jungle Kotwal, Tiger bird, Pelican, Stork, Turtle, and Deer
And a large python that was basking in the sun without fear
It was all very delightful
Lunch was served in the house of Ashiwinideep
His family, we were honored to meet
They were very gracious
We had a time fabulous
